Classical Russian Art

The Russian style of classical oil painting and academic drawing was my first introduction to a systematic process of image making. I attended The Florence Classical Art Academy in Florence, Italy which taught Russian academic drawing and a mixture of Russian Impressionism and classical oil painting methods. We studied anatomy, drawing, painting, composition, and art history for eight to twelve hours each day. It was a rigorous process, but one which produced results.

The process of translating a 3D world to a 2D drawing or painting breaks the world down into a concise visual system—everything can be categorized as light, shadow, and/or color. It is with precise observation that one is able to meaningfully communicate our 3D world to a 2D surface.

The hours I have spent observing nature are some of my most valued moments. Whether it is the delicacy of a shadow falling across a chest or the harshness of the line on a cheekbone, I found my passion for applying a visual system to a myriad of unique circumstances.
